How Much Is My Scrap Car Worth?

Scrap prices aren't a mystery, but they're not fixed either. They move with the global metals market, shift with your vehicle's condition, and vary depending on a handful of factors you can understand before you pick up the phone. This guide explains every variable — so when you call us for a quote, you know exactly what to expect.

What are the main factors that determine scrap car value?

Scrap dealers don't pull a number from thin air. Your car's value is built from several measurable components:

  • Weight and metal content — the single biggest driver of scrap value. Heavier cars contain more steel, aluminium and copper, and scrap metal is bought and sold by the tonne.
  • Condition and completeness — a car with all its major components intact (engine, gearbox, catalytic converter, battery) is worth more than one that has been partially stripped.
  • Catalytic converter presence — cats contain platinum, palladium and rhodium, all of which are precious metals. Their presence (or absence) can shift the quote noticeably.
  • Current metal market prices — scrap steel, aluminium and precious metal prices fluctuate constantly. The price we quote today reflects today's market.
  • Vehicle type and make — some manufacturers use more aluminium in their construction, and aluminium fetches a higher price per tonne than steel. SUVs and people carriers are typically heavier and return more.

All of these are assessed quickly when you call. Have your registration number and postcode ready, and we'll give you a firm price in minutes.

Why does the weight of my car matter so much?

Scrap metal is a commodity — it's bought and sold by the tonne on commodity markets linked to global steel demand. The more metal your car contains, the more it's worth. A typical family hatchback weighs between 1,200 and 1,500 kg. A large SUV or people carrier might weigh 1,800–2,100 kg. That difference translates directly into the scrap price.

The composition matters too. Most car bodies are primarily mild steel, but modern vehicles contain increasing quantities of aluminium — used in engine blocks, bonnets, body panels and structural components — as manufacturers prioritise weight reduction. Aluminium typically fetches a higher price per tonne than steel. If your car is from a brand known for aluminium-intensive construction (Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, some BMW models), this can work in your favour.

At the bottom of the scale are small city cars — think Fiat 500, Volkswagen Polo, Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 — which are light and contain relatively modest amounts of recoverable metal. They'll always receive a lower scrap price than a Volvo estate or a Ford S-Max, regardless of condition.

Does the catalytic converter affect the scrap price significantly?

Yes — and often more than people realise. Catalytic converters contain trace quantities of platinum, palladium and rhodium. These are some of the most valuable metals on earth by weight, and a functioning catalytic converter in good condition can add a meaningful amount to the overall quote.

Catalytic converter theft has become widespread in recent years, particularly for Toyota, Honda and Lexus hybrids, as well as some older BMWs and Land Rovers. If your car has had its catalytic converter stolen, tell us when you call. We'll adjust the quote to reflect this — and we won't hold it against you. The rest of the vehicle still has value.

Important: It is illegal in the UK to sell a removed catalytic converter as a standalone item to an unlicensed buyer. A legitimate scrap dealer will assess the full vehicle and pay you for everything together. Anyone asking you to remove the cat before collection and sell it separately should be avoided.

Does a running car get more than a non-runner?

Generally, a running vehicle commands a slightly higher price — but the gap is smaller than most people assume. A running engine suggests the major mechanical components are present and intact, which reduces uncertainty when quoting. A non-runner may have an unknown fault or damage that affects the overall condition.

That said, many non-runners we collect are in excellent condition otherwise — the engine failed, the gearbox died, or the car simply won't start due to a dead battery or a mundane electrical fault. These vehicles are worth close to what a running equivalent would fetch. The key is to describe the situation honestly when you call so we can price accurately.

If your car doesn't run, don't let that put you off calling. We collect non-runners across Coventry and all surrounding towns — including Nuneaton, Solihull and Warwick — and we bring recovery equipment as standard.

What about Category N and Category S insurance write-offs?

Both categories are collected and valued by scrap dealers — the write-off category mainly affects the second-hand value of the car, not its scrap value.

Category N (non-structural damage) means the vehicle sustained damage deemed uneconomical to repair but the chassis and structural integrity are intact. Category N cars are often still mechanically sound and retain a reasonable scrap value.

Category S (structural damage repaired or repairable) means the vehicle sustained structural damage — to the chassis, crumple zones or body frame. The scrap value may be marginally lower, but these are collected as standard. The important thing is that you declare the category when you call — it lets us price accurately and ensures no surprises on collection day.

If you're unsure of the category, check your insurance documentation or check the vehicle's history online. Either way, call us and describe what you know — we'll give you an honest quote.

How to get the best price for your scrap car

A few things that genuinely make a difference:

Don't strip out parts before calling. It might seem logical to remove a good alloy wheel or a working battery and sell them separately — but doing so reduces the car's scrap value, sometimes by more than the part was worth. Let the dealer assess the whole vehicle first.

Be specific about condition. Telling us the exact fault, the MOT history, and any missing parts gives us the information to price confidently — which means the quote won't change on arrival.

Get two or three quotes. For heavier or more valuable vehicles, spending ten minutes comparing quotes from licensed dealers is worth doing. Prices can vary more than people expect.

Ask for a guaranteed price. Avoid dealers who give vague quotes and say they'll confirm when they arrive. A reputable operator gives you a firm price over the phone and sticks to it.

Common Questions About Scrap Car Prices

Do you charge anything to value my scrap car?+

No — quotes are always free with no obligation. Call 07593 103323 with your registration and postcode and we'll give you a firm price within a couple of minutes. No strings attached.

Will the scrap price change between the quote and collection?+

No. The price we quote over the phone is the price we pay on collection day. The only exception would be if the vehicle turns out to be in materially different condition from what was described. If you're honest about the car when you call, the price will not change when we arrive.

Does the year of my car affect its scrap value?+

Less than you'd think. Scrap value is primarily driven by weight and completeness. A 2005 estate in complete condition may fetch more in scrap terms than a newer small city car that's been partially stripped. Age affects second-hand value far more than scrap value.

Is a running car worth more in scrap than a non-runner?+

Often slightly, because it confirms the major components are present and intact. But the difference is usually modest. Non-runners are collected regularly at competitive prices — just describe the car's condition accurately when you call.

My catalytic converter has been stolen — does that reduce my payout?+

Yes, it does affect the overall value because catalytic converters contain precious metals. Tell us when you call and we'll factor it into the quote. The vehicle is still worth collecting — it simply adjusts the price rather than eliminates it.
