Common Scrap Car Questions Answered

Whether you're scrapping your first car or you've done it before and want to check the process, this guide covers the questions people ask us most often. We're a licensed local service based in Coventry — we collect across the city and all surrounding towns including Nuneaton, Rugby, Solihull and beyond.

How much is my scrap car worth?

Scrap car prices fluctuate with the metal market, so there's no single fixed rate — but you can get a firm, guaranteed quote over the phone in a matter of minutes. The main factors that determine what your car is worth are:

  • Weight — heavier cars contain more steel, aluminium and other metals, so they generally return a higher scrap value.
  • Condition — a running vehicle with all its parts commands more than one that's been stripped or has components missing.
  • Catalytic converter — if the cat is intact and in good condition, it can add meaningfully to the overall value.
  • Make and model — some vehicles have a higher proportion of aluminium (which commands a better price per tonne) or more desirable salvageable parts.

When you call 07593 103323, have your registration number ready. We'll look up the vehicle and give you a firm price over the phone. The quote we give you is the amount we pay — there are no deductions when we arrive and no last-minute revisions.

Can I scrap my car without a logbook?

The V5C logbook (also called the registration certificate) is the preferred document for scrapping a car, but losing it doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck. Here's what you need to know:

If you have the V5C, the process is simple: you complete section 9 (or use the DVLA's online service) to notify them that you've sold or transferred the vehicle to a scrap dealer. We handle the dealer's side of the notification on the same day we collect.

If you've lost the V5C, you can apply for a duplicate from the DVLA (V62 form) before or after the car is collected. In many cases we can still proceed with collection — call us on 07593 103323 and we'll advise on the right steps. The key thing is that the DVLA notification is completed correctly so you're no longer liable for the vehicle.

Important: Never hand over a car without ensuring the DVLA notification is made. We handle this on your behalf on the day of collection, so you don't need to worry about it — but it must be done to protect you from future fines, tolls or offences committed in the vehicle after it leaves your possession.

Do I need to notify the DVLA when scrapping my car?

Yes — and it's one of the most important steps in the process. When a vehicle is scrapped, the DVLA needs to be informed so that it's removed from the registered keeper's name. Failing to do this means you could remain liable for road tax, penalties, or any incidents involving the vehicle even after you no longer own it.

As a licensed scrap metal dealer and Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) operator, we submit the DVLA notification on the day of collection. This removes you from the vehicle record immediately. You'll also receive a Certificate of Destruction — a legal document proving the car was disposed of at a licensed facility. This is required under the End of Life Vehicles Regulations and protects you in the event of any future dispute.

You don't need to take any additional action yourself. We handle the paperwork, and you receive the Certificate of Destruction as your proof.

Can I scrap a non-running car?

Yes — non-running vehicles are among the most common cars we collect. Whether the engine has seized, the gearbox has given up, the head gasket has blown, or the car simply won't turn over, we can recover it from your property without any extra charge.

When you call, just let us know that the vehicle doesn't run. We'll bring recovery equipment — a flatbed transporter or tow equipment as appropriate — and handle the loading ourselves. You don't need to arrange anything. A non-running vehicle won't affect the quote we give you over the phone, as long as you describe the car's condition accurately when you call.

We regularly collect non-runners from driveways, garages, back gardens and even car parks across Coventry and nearby areas including Bedworth, Kenilworth and Warwick. Unusual access situations — tight side passages, narrow driveways, low-ceiling garages — are something we deal with regularly.

How does scrap car collection work?

The process is straightforward and requires very little from you:

1

Get a Quote

Call 07593 103323 with your registration number, postcode and a brief description of the vehicle's condition. We'll give you a firm price within a couple of minutes. No obligation to go ahead.

2

Agree a Collection Time

If you're happy with the quote, we'll arrange a collection slot — often the same day or the following morning. We come to your home or wherever the vehicle is located across our service area.

3

Collection, Payment & Paperwork

We load the vehicle, pay you by bank transfer on the spot, notify the DVLA and issue your Certificate of Destruction — all before we leave your property. Nothing else is required from you.

The whole process from call to collection typically takes less than 24 hours. For customers who call early in the day, same-day collection is usually available across Coventry and nearby towns.

Can I scrap a SORN car?

Yes — a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) has no impact on our ability to collect. A SORN simply means the vehicle is declared off the road and exempt from road tax. Many of the cars we collect have been SORN'd for months or even years before the owner decides to scrap them.

The only thing to bear in mind is that a SORN vehicle cannot be driven on the public road — but we use our own licensed recovery equipment to transport the car, so this isn't an issue. As long as the vehicle is on private property (a driveway, a garage, or land you have permission to be on), we can collect it.

When you call, mention that the car is SORN. It's useful for us to know so we come fully prepared — especially if the car has been static for a long time and may have flat tyres, seized brakes or a dead battery.

More Questions About Scrapping Your Car

A few more things people commonly ask us before booking a collection.

How long does scrapping a car take from start to finish? +

The process is quicker than most people expect. A phone call to get a quote takes two to three minutes. We can usually arrange collection for the same day or the following day. On the day itself, the collection, paperwork and bank transfer are all completed within an hour — often much less.

Do you pay cash for scrap cars? +

No — and no legitimate scrap metal dealer in the UK can legally pay cash. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, all payments must be made by bank transfer or cheque. We pay by bank transfer on the day of collection, confirmed before we leave your property. Any collector offering cash should be treated with caution — they may not be operating legally.

What documents do I need to scrap my car? +

Ideally you'll have the V5C logbook (registration certificate). This makes the DVLA notification process straightforward. If you've lost the V5C, call us on 07593 103323 and explain the situation — in many cases we can still proceed and will advise on the correct steps to protect you legally.

Can you collect from a tight driveway or a garage? +

Yes. We deal with awkward access regularly — narrow side passages, back gardens, low-ceiling garages, and cars wedged in tight spots. When you call, describe the access situation and we'll come equipped to handle it. There's no extra charge for difficult access.

Will you still collect if my car has flat tyres or a dead battery? +

Absolutely. Flat tyres, dead batteries, seized brakes — none of these prevent collection. We bring recovery equipment as standard for non-running vehicles. Just mention the condition when you call so we arrive fully prepared with the right equipment.

What happens to my car after it is scrapped? +

Your vehicle is taken to an authorised treatment facility (ATF). There, hazardous fluids are drained and disposed of safely, reusable parts are salvaged, and the remaining metal is shredded and recycled. Under UK End of Life Vehicle regulations, at least 95% of a modern car's materials must be recovered or recycled. Your Certificate of Destruction is legal proof this process has been completed correctly.
