• Weight — heavier cars contain more steel, aluminium and other metals, so they generally return a higher scrap value.
• Condition — a running vehicle with all its parts commands more than one that's been stripped or has components missing.
• Catalytic converter — if the cat is intact and in good condition, it can add meaningfully to the overall value.
• Make and model — some vehicles have a higher proportion of aluminium (which commands a better price per tonne) or more desirable salvageable parts.

Failing to do this means you could remain liable for road tax, penalties, or any incidents involving the vehicle even after you no longer own it.
