Can I Scrap a SORN Car?

The short answer is yes — a SORN declaration does not prevent you from scrapping a vehicle. This guide explains what SORN means, how it affects collection, value and DVLA notification, and why many SORN vehicles are actually ideal candidates for scrapping.

What SORN means and who uses it

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It is a declaration made to the DVLA stating that a vehicle is not being used on public roads and is therefore exempt from the requirement to hold road tax.

You apply for SORN through GOV.UK. Once it is active, the vehicle must be kept on private land — a driveway, private car park, garage or other off-road location. It cannot be driven or parked on a public road.

People use SORN for a range of reasons:

  • The car has failed its MOT and is awaiting repair
  • The vehicle is a project car or classic being restored
  • The owner has moved abroad or no longer needs a car temporarily
  • The car is no longer roadworthy and is not worth repairing
  • The owner wants to avoid paying road tax on a car sitting unused

For many vehicles, SORN is simply the last stop before scrapping. And that's perfectly fine — the SORN status has no bearing on whether the vehicle can be collected and legally scrapped.

Yes — you can scrap a SORN car

There is no legal requirement to cancel the SORN before arranging to scrap the vehicle. The SORN is automatically cancelled when the DVLA processes the vehicle as scrapped, following notification from you and the authorised treatment facility (ATF).

The scrapping process for a SORN vehicle is exactly the same as for any other:

1

Call for a quote — give the registration number, confirm the car is on SORN and describe any significant issues

2

Agree a collection date — we come to you, wherever the vehicle is stored

3

Hand over the keys and V5C (if you have it) — payment is made before the car leaves

4

Notify the DVLA yourself — online via GOV.UK, same day if possible. The SORN cancels automatically as part of the scrapping notification

Driving a SORN car to the scrapyard — why this is illegal

One of the most common mistakes people make with SORN vehicles is assuming they can drive them to a scrapyard to avoid a collection fee. This is illegal and carries serious consequences.

A SORN vehicle cannot be driven on a public road under any circumstances other than to attend a pre-booked MOT. The SORN declaration removes the right to use the vehicle on public roads. Driving it — even for a short distance, even at low speed, even if it's insured — is a criminal offence under the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002.

Penalties for driving a SORN vehicle include: a fixed penalty notice of £80, potential prosecution and a court fine of up to £1,000, and the vehicle may be seized by police. It is never worth the risk, especially when collection from your location is free.

If you want to move a SORN vehicle to a scrapyard yourself, it must be transported on a trailer or flat-bed — not driven. The simpler and safer option is to use a collection service that comes to you. We offer free collection across Coventry, Warwick, Solihull and Bedworth — no need to move the vehicle at all.

Does SORN affect the scrap value of the car?

SORN status itself has no direct impact on scrap value. Scrap prices are primarily determined by the vehicle's weight and the current price of scrap steel, not its tax or MOT status.

What can affect value is the condition that the vehicle is in as a result of being unused. A car that has been sitting on a driveway or in a garage for an extended period may have:

  • A flat or dead battery
  • Seized brakes or a seized handbrake
  • Flat tyres — which doesn't affect scrap value but may affect whether it can be moved
  • A missing catalytic converter, if it's been stored in an accessible location
  • Parts that have been removed — which does reduce value compared to a complete vehicle

If the car is complete and intact, being on SORN won't reduce what you're offered. If parts are missing or the vehicle is in significantly worse condition than typical, the quote will reflect that — as it would for any vehicle in that condition.

Cancelling SORN — you don't need to do anything separately

When a vehicle is scrapped, the SORN is cancelled automatically. Here's what happens in sequence:

  • You notify the DVLA that you've disposed of the vehicle (via GOV.UK or V5C section)
  • The ATF notifies the DVLA independently when they issue the Certificate of Destruction
  • The DVLA updates their records to show the vehicle as scrapped
  • The SORN is cancelled as part of that record update — it simply ceases to apply to a vehicle that no longer exists in the register

There is no separate "cancel SORN" step you need to take. The DVLA notification when scrapping handles everything. See our full DVLA notification guide for details on how to complete that step correctly.

Long-static SORN vehicles — collecting from difficult locations

A common situation we handle is SORN vehicles that have been parked up for years and haven't moved under their own power. These may be in garages, on driveways, on private farmland, or in storage units.

We can collect non-runners and vehicles that cannot be moved under their own power. Our team is experienced with low-clearance driveways, garages, narrow access roads and difficult terrain — just let us know the situation when you call so we can bring the right equipment.

If the vehicle is genuinely inaccessible (for example, inside a building with a very low ceiling or at the end of an extremely tight track), let us know and we'll discuss the options. In the vast majority of cases, collection is straightforward.

Insurance on SORN cars — what you need to know

A SORN vehicle on private land is not legally required to hold insurance. However, if it is stored somewhere accessible and there is a risk of it being damaged or causing damage, having some form of cover in place is sensible.

Our recommendation is to keep whatever insurance you have in place until after the car has been collected and the DVLA notification confirmed. If the vehicle is damaged in a fire, flood or collision on your property before collection — however unlikely — you'll want to be covered. Once the car is gone and the notification is made, you can cancel the policy and reclaim any unused premium.

SORN Car Scrapping Questions

Do I need to cancel the SORN before scrapping my car?+

No. The SORN is automatically cancelled when the DVLA processes the vehicle as scrapped. You don't need to take any separate step — just complete the standard DVLA keeper notification after the car is collected, and the SORN will be cancelled as part of that process.

Can you collect a SORN car from a garage or storage unit?+

Yes. We regularly collect from garages, lock-ups, storage units and private land. As long as there's access for a flatbed or transporter, we can collect. Let us know the access situation when you call and we'll bring the right equipment.

Does my SORN car need to be insured for collection?+

Not legally — a SORN vehicle on private land doesn't require insurance. But we'd recommend keeping any existing cover in place until after collection and DVLA notification are confirmed, just in case anything happens to the car on your property beforehand.

My car has been on SORN for several years — does that affect the scrap value?+

SORN itself doesn't affect value — weight and condition do. A long-static car may have deteriorated or had parts removed, which can reduce the price. But a complete, intact SORN vehicle is quoted the same as any other vehicle of the same weight and condition.

Can I drive my SORN car to the scrapyard myself to save collection costs?+

No — it's illegal to drive a SORN vehicle on a public road. The only exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT. Penalties include an £80 fixed penalty, potential prosecution and vehicle seizure. As our collection is free, there's no reason to risk it.
